a look at what's to come but we begin with ktvu's jade hernandez in east palo alto where crews try to shore up a levee that gave way, jade. >> reporter: the work continues tonight. this temporary levee hopes to hold the rain until the reconstruction project. but people are unsure with rain expected tomorrow. curtis and his wife left when they saw water bringing tires into yard washing away what was already there. >> we will go through this tomorrow again, you know. >> reporter: with the flood came flood insurance. >> if it does we'll just have to take off and leave again. we can't stay, we have to use common sense. >> reporter: earlier today we spoke to the executive director of joint powers authority. the regional agency made up of three cities and two counties takes care of flood control issues. >> the joint power authority has approved a project that will rebuild the whole levy system. >> reporter: it was easy to see where creek water boiled up on the other side pushing water into the neighborhood. east palo alto's new city manager said with more rain on the way crews needed to

took aim at the bay area. a 100-foot tree in fairfax barely missed the sleeping homeowners inside when it came crashing down early this morning. in san francisco city crews spent this day clearing out clogged drains and the public works department says it's expected to be a weekend long task. you can see one of the biggest rocks actually blocked one of the lanes forcing drivers to slow down and go around it. we have team coverage for you tonight. chief meteorologist bill martin is in the ktvu weather center where he's been tracking the storm all day. maureen naylor is standing by but we begin with jana katsuyama where it's been raining. in healdsburg. >> reporter: see how wet the ground is, all of that water is seeping into the ground and ending up in local rivers and streams this is the russian river. you can see how fast it is going. it could reach near flood levels by the time the next storm finishes. rain is drenching almost soaked roads. areas stream, rivers and low lying areas are flooding. with two storms down there's still one more to go. a storm watch is in effect. >> the stor

shooter at a rampage opens fire at an elementary school. >> they had their entire lives ahead of them. birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. >> tonight a nation in mourning and the question how could this happen. >>> good evening i'm gasia mikaelian. >> and i'm ken wayne. frank and julie are off. a vigil wrapped up in newtown connecticut where the community remembered the victims of today's massacre at sandy hook elementary school. authorities identified the shooter at 20-year-old adam lanza. he reportedly had a history of mental illness. we have learned police found more guns on campus. we have news reporters covering all angles of this story. including who the shooter was. but we have jennifer davis. >> reporter: there was also a filled to capacity crowd here for a vigil earlier this evening. clearly this town is very much still struggling with what happened here earlier today. as is much of the country even the president was wiping away tears. >> it's identifying the shooter as 20-year-old adam lanza. they say he is the one who killed more than two dozen people

tonight about a frightening shooting that happened at a mall near portland oregon. three people including the gunman are dead. a fourth person is fighting for their life. amber lee is monitoring developments and is in the newsroom with what she's found out. >> reporter: the clackamas sheriff department says that they know who the gunman is but they're not ready to release the information. the festive mood turned into food and confusion after the gunman opened fire in the food court area. >> the shots were really loud and really scary. >> i heard three, and when i saw people ran i knew it was not a joke. so i started running. >> reporter: others said me announced i am a shooting before firing. a witness identifyed the gunman as a white man. >> wearing a hockey mask like a friday the 13th kind of version of it. sort of white just plain faced hockey mask came jogging through the macy's running toward the public area. he was holding in full view an assault rifle. >> reporter: an army of officers came to the scene. he ran back into macy's. it's unclear how many shots were fired or if the man h

out of the bay area this last weekend before christmas. flights west of denver were delayed at san francisco international airport. holiday travelers took is in stride. >> i got a text message by knew it was them. it was southwest texting us we were going to be an hour and a half late. >> at one point delays caused traffic backups at the airport. travelers were asked to wait in the cell phone lots rather than circle the airport. >>> in kansas city, missouri, stranded motorists found ways to pass the time when a winter weather created unsafe driving conditions. here you can see two guys throwing a football around next to standstill traffic. heavy snow blanketed the city leaving the roadway icy as well. some streets were blocked off entirely. >> mark tamayo is here now with the radar. you can see still good sections of rain right now. >> we've been watching it over the past few hours. we've noticed an increase in the rainfall rates. as we zoom in, moderate to heavy rainfall. increasing. moving the maps closer to san jose. increasing rainfall rates. just to the south and east of downt

discovered at an elementary school in contra costa county. good evening everybody, i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. ken wayne joins joins us now and says this isn't the first pipe bomb found in pleasanthill in the last few days. >> reporter: this is the second pipe bomb found at a pleasant hill school and now investigators are trying to determine if they are connected. >> right outside the window. and had it gone off it would have caused damage to the school, absolutely. >> reporter: the children were evacuated and taken to a church next door where their parents picked them up. the bomb squad was called in. >> found that it did contain an explosive inside and it was a live explosive device. >> reporter: no one was injured. police tracked down a red pickup truck and arrested three teenagers. >> we have some good leads. we have some video we're hoping to examine and determine whether or not they're involved in other crimes. >> it was frightening and i just heard it before coming here, but it does seem out of place. >> reporter: nicole becker just moved here from san francisc
